CRISTO REI (ALMADA)

The monument to the Christ-King is situated in plateaus of Almada.

The monument was constructed on the basis of the promise made for the Bishops of Portugal to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the hope to keep the country moved away from the horrors of 2nd World-wide War.
The pedestal has 82m.
The statue has 28m height and 16m width. The monument, symbol of gratitude for the peace, was inaugurated in 17 of May of 1959.
In the top of the pedestal, 113 meters above the level of the sea, you can enjoy a fabulous sight of the area of the estuary of the Tejo.

CASCAIS


In this tour we will visit Cascais.

This town was a small fishing port throughout early history as it lies protected from nature’s elements at the mouth of the Rio Tejo.

D. Pedro I elevated Cascais to the category of village in 1364.

In the Cascais bay you can watch the local fishermen’s preparing for their journeys in the sea.

Cascais citizens just love boats and sea.

As usual in Portugal you can find a lot of monuments to visit, including many church’s like this one.

Always pay attention to the detail. You can find fantastic themes for your photos.

In Cascais you have many restaurants were you can appreciate the delicious Portuguese food, namely the excellent fish captured by the local fisherman’s.

You must eat Sardines, one of the Portuguese favourite meals, like the Cod Fish.

Obidos


In our first blog tour we will visit the portuguese museum village Obidos.

The tour start in the main street. It has been known with this name since the 14th century. It takes us directly from the town gate to the castle.

In the main street you can find specialized Portuguese wine shop’s.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Main Street underwent significant reconstruction works
Commissioned by King Sancho I, in 1186,
St. James's Church was completely destroyed with the 1755 earthquake and rebuilt in 1772.

The main altar had a painting representing St. James.

The Obidos castle, of Roman origin, was built on top of a hill under Arab domain. After the Christian conquest (1148), the castle was repaired and enlarged many times.

During the reign of King Manuel I, the alcaide orders the construction of a palace and changes some parts of the castle. In the Alcaide’s palace the manueline windows can be found
